Christmas Gift Guide - 2020

Christmas Gift Guide - 2020

Heading into the festive season for what has undoubtedly been one of the strangest and challenging years in recent memory we're here to help see out the year with some festive cheer! If you're looking for a gift for a loved one, work colleague or to treat yourself then read on.

Lots of choice but shop early this year!

We've worked with our suppliers this year to ensure we've got our biggest ever range of knives and accessories available to choose from and as we're an online only shop, you can order 24 hours a day and we definitely recommend getting your shopping done early this year to allow for any potential disruption in postal services due to the anticipated massive demand for online shopping this Christmas.

Keeping it nice and easy, we'll include two of our favourite knives in various price brackets and a few specials along the way and remember - we make a big effort to ensure everything we sell is great.

Knives under £100

Every year without fail, this is perhaps one of the most eagerly purchased price points of all our knives and we've got some absolute crackers that will definitely sell out before Christmas and while we do our best to ensure good supply of everything the reality of Japanese knives is they're made in small batches, sometimes by single blacksmiths so once they're gone they can take months to resupply so don't miss out on these.

Astonishingly good value, if you're looking for an all round chef knife then we can honestly say jump right in and pick up either a santoku or gyuto from either of Masutani's V1 or V10 ranges.

The Masutani V1 santoku - £80

Next up is the equally excellent value Moonlit Waves range from Sakai Takayuki. A company who have been making knives, blades and other tools in Japan for more than 600 years. A petty is a versatile smaller knife and the Moonlit Waves is a well balanced and easy to care for pick.

£100 to £150

First up is one of our newer ranges, the Tsunehisa brand is one that represents many small workshops and blacksmiths and is excellent value for money particularly if you're looking for a carbon steel knife to experience and enjoy the great edge retention properties.

Tsunehisa AS Morado gyuto 210mm - £140

Next is one of our all time best selling knives and it's hard to not recommend it year after year! The 45 layer damascus range from Sakai Takayuki really ticks off every box in a Japanese knife in this price range. It boasts great sharpness out of the box, looks stunning, is easy to look after and is very well made and finished so it's a wonderful all round knife you really can't go wrong with!

We've got two incredible recommendations in this price bracket you're going to love!!

First up, a new knife from 4th generation blacksmith Shigeki Tanaka who creates some superb knives in his small workshop in Miki City.

Shigeki Tanaka VG10 santoku - £180

Next up is one of the sharpest and hardest knives we've ever tested on the site. Made by Yoshida Hamono the ZDP-189 range is treated to a hardness of 66-67HRC and the edge retention of the knife is out of this world!

Yoshida Hamono ZDP189 santoku - £185 (Kurouchi finish | Polished finish)

Looking for something really special then we've definitely got you covered here. Yu Kurosaki is a master blacksmith with a wonderful eye for visually striking blade finishes across his ranges and the mid-sized gyuto in his Raijin range is one of our absolute favourites.

Yu Kurosaki Raijin gyuto 240mm - £285

Next up, a true classic - the Masakage Kumo made by master blacksmith Anryu san who has been perfecting his craft for more than 50 years and is widely respected as one of Japan's masters.

Masakage Kumo santoku - £230

Something special - Knives over £300

If you're looking for something truly special then check out all our knives over £300 and we've been fortunate to recently secure some stock of the much coveted and incredible Masamoto KS knife which is our first pick.

Masamoto KS gyuto 240mm - £395 (Saya included)

Last in our knife picks is a gyuto that is one of the most beautiful knives we've ever seen. The design, fit and finish is out of this world and Kato san has really crafted something magical with his R2 gyuto here.

Yoshimi Kato R2/SG2 gyuto with limited edition Ironwood handle - £375

Special Offer - Get a half price honing rod with each knife order

With every order containing a knife, you're eligible for a half price ceramic honing rod (RRP £40) and we definitely recommend using one with your Japanese knife just to keep that edge in tip-top condition.

Accessories

Focus is usually on the knives but we also recommend checking out some of our equally lovely selected accessories for storing and looking after your knives.

Gift cards

Not sure what to buy for someone or want them to choose their knife? Then a gift card is a perfect choice. They're delivered by email and have no expiration date so they're ideal for lots of uses or as a last minute gift for someone!

Christmas shipping and deliveries

Across the country we expect people will be shopping online a lot more than ever given the current situation and so we do recommend getting your orders in earlier than ever this year.

Demand for our knives has risen significantly with many people now spending more time at home and cooking more and so to avoid disappointment buy early and we'll get your order posted out as quickly as possible because many Japanese knives take several weeks and months to restock!

Christmas 2020 returns policy extension

Any item purchased between 10th November 2020 and Monday 4th January 2021 will be covered by an extended returns policy deadline and you will have until Friday 29th January 2021 to contact us to arrange a return should you wish.

This allows for you to purchase Christmas gifts with peace of mind that if for any reason they're not quite right for the person you're giving them to you can arrange to return it unused and in the original undamaged packaging for a refund under our normal returns policy.
