Light, nimble and understated, the mid sized Gekko petty is an excellent utility knife suitable for a wide range of jobs and shows Kurosaki-san's eye for subtle design is just as good as his more visually impactful lines.

First Impressions

Right out of the box the Gekko is a thin knife and that profile is just ready to cut. Kurosaki-san is perhaps better known for knives that are a bit more showy with their incredible hammer finishes but this line is pure understated class.

Beauty

The subtle migaki finish and single piece octagonal oak handle is a beauty and the slightly unorthodox "Ei" shape of the spine provides more visual interest as well as additional clearance.

In Hand

Across the range, the Gekko has a thin profile bordering on a laser and on the smaller petty and longer sujihiki you'll find even with the slanted Ei shape, they feel quite familiar in hand height wise.

That shape does come into its own a little more once you use the all rounders (bunka and gyuto) and also the nakiri where there is a definite feel and benefit of the additional height and clearance.

Durability

This line has been designed to make use of HAP40 steel which is hardened to a high level (64-66HRC) and so offers excellent edge retention and durability.

It's semi-stainless so the core steel will develop a slow, light patina over time and just show that core steel up to the stainless cladding.

Ease of Care

These are a semi stainless knife so we'd recommend caring for them following the normal rinse and dry routine but it would also be worth applying drop or two of camellia oil from time to time as HAP40 steel has a chromium content but it's worth the bit of extra care for the edge retention properties it offers.

The core steel develops a light patina over time but it's more subtle than a fully reactive carbon steel.

Our Verdict

With many of Kurosaki-san's knives you're often immediately drawn to the incredible range of finishes he creates but the Gekko is a different beast. It's low-key and subtle but as with all his knives, the foundation of quality steel and top class finish is still there.

Performance is excellent as always and if you're able to get a Gekko knife while they're in stock, then we're confident you're going to enjoy the looks and feel paired with the brilliant HAP40 steel.
