Our in-depth range review

First Impressions

Made in South Korea, this is an excellent range of lasers and shows while this type of knife making outside of Japan is not on the same scale, skilled craftspeople make great knives no matter where they're based!

Every inch of the SLD Migaki exudes quality from the subtle hairline migaki finish to the carefully rounded heel and spine to the exceptionally thin edge that simply glides through food.

Beauty

Subtle and understated, the blade is finished to a high polish with very fine migaki hairline finish runs vertically along the blade and has been paired with a dark ebony and buffalo horn handle to complement that subtlety.

In Hand

Across the range the blade is light and a thin laser profile and cutting performance and food release is excellent. With the extra touches like the rounded spine and heel, they're comfortable in hand and are hugely enjoyable knives to use and work with

The balance point depending on the knife size tends to be either around the heel of the blade or a little further back due to the weight of the dense wood of the ebony handles.

Durability

Treated to a rockwell hardness around 61-62HRC, the SLD monosteel is robust that takes and holds a keen edge with relative ease and so for long term use it's a well balanced choice of steel for both home and professional kitchens.

Ease of Care & Maintenance Tips

The steel is semi stainless SLD so is technically reactive but it's a steel that in practical terms is very close to essentially being stainless so it's pretty easy to keep the knife in great order.

Our Verdict

We're very happy to be able to stock knives from Punchundo, their skill and experience in knife making dating back to 1984 results in seriously impressive knives like these.

Many people will draw a fairly obvious parallel with Koutetsu's Iron Clad range which is quite reasonable, they're both exceptionally well finished laser profiles but the SLD Migaki range from Pungchundo more than stands up on its own merits as a fantastic value for money option for anyone looking for a particularly well finished laser.
