About this range

First Impressions

The Hayabusa ranges in various core steels from Hatsukokoro all boast a laser profile and lightweight feel in hand when fitted with the wa handles and the this stunning rainbow damascus line is another well finished one with a classic Blue #2 core steel giving a  high level of hardness and performance.

Beauty

If you're looking for some eye candy then this is it!

The subtle layering of the copper and brass to create the rainbow is made with a slightly matt finish to it and then running down to the blue #2 core steel with is highly polished almost to a mirror finish these knives look amazing.

Over time, the core steel will also patina depending on what ingredients you're cutting and working with so those looks will evolve over time to become even more unique.

When you've got a blade this beautiful, we often prefer pairing it with a lower key handle and so the dark single piece ebony handle works great in our opinion.

In Hand

The Hayabusa is a light knife blade in general - it's a laser profile and so nice and thin all the way up to the spine which is also thin without too much taper but this is balanced out with the ebony handle offering a balance point close to or at where the blade enters the handle.

Durability

Blue #2 and stainless cladding is a great combination for making an affordable and durable knife with excellent edge retention and durability.

Ease of Care

The Blue #2 is a carbon steel core and the knife is clad in stainless steel so is relatively easy to maintain and resharpen although with the high level of hardness it may take a little longer to sharpen but it's more a matter of patience!

Just follow our normal carbon steel care instructions and this is a knife you will be using for many years. For long term care we'd recommend a carbon steel care kit.

Our Verdict

What's not to love?!

These knives are quite subtle but absolutely striking and each one has its own unique rainbow damascus finish and not only that, the Blue #2 core clad in stainless steel is a great option for a knife that's more than just a pretty face, it's ready to get to work.

Like all of the Hayabusa ranges, Hatsukokoro make these knives using a mixture of modern machine tecnology to allow for more consistent finishes but then to ensure the finishes are as good as possible the knives are all sharpened and finished by hand.

Excellent quality, looks and value for money.
