The petty is a versatile every day knife and when one looks and cuts as well as this you'll be wondering how you lived without it.

This knife is sold with either a Konosuke magnolia wooden or handmade friction fit leather saya designed specifically to fit included in the price.

First Impressions

The Sumiiro was designed to be slightly taller at the heel and thicker at the spine than other Konosuke knives but without compromising on the performance you'd expect from the very hard SLD steel core.

Beauty

This is undoubtely a stunning range. The black nashiji finish gives a nod to the black calligraphy ink used throughout the centuries in Japan while the core steel is polished to a fantastic mirror finish.

It's then paired with a D shaped burnt chestnut handle that both compliments and contrasts the blade. It's a striking knife in every respect.

In Hand

Because of that taller and thicker profile the sumiiro is feels sturdy in hand but remains light, nimble and well balanced while the d-shaped handle has just a little texture in the finish to give a tactile finish in hand.

Durability

The SLD core steel takes and holds a great edge and has been hardened to a high level of 65HRC so it's going to last and offers exceptional edge retention.

Ease of Care

SLD is close to being stainless so caring for it is pretty straightforward if you just follow the normal care instructions for any Japanese knife.

Sharpening knives at this level of hardness can require a little more time and effort than lower hardness steels but the tradeoff is the edge retention is improved and you'll find you need to resharpen less.

As this is a minimally reactive steel, we'd recommend a Japanese knife care kit for long term maintenance.

Our Verdict

The Sumiiro range boasts a superb level of performance and edge retention and the workhorse profile combined with the very thin edge glides through food.

Konosuke's attention to detail shows through in these beautifully made knives made by top blacksmith Takahiro Nihei.
