First Impressions

Like many Takeshi Saji knives, the SPG STRIX is an immediately eye catching range and boasts the quality of finish you would naturally expect from a master blacksmith.

Across the range, there is a reasonably thick profile with a slightly hollow grind that's very thin behind the edge and a fairly minimal distal taper all combining to offer impressive cutting performance.

Beauty

The high polish almost mirror finish on the core steel and the almost mirror polished cladding marked with the distinctive tsuchime patterns is lovely, much like the attention on performance, many of Saji-san's knives are also works of art.

In Hand

Well balanced mid weight knives with a reassuring feel in hand. While not quite a full, thicker workhorse profile they're not lasers eihther so sit in that comfortable mid point that offers a little weight but are comfortable and nimble in use.

Durability

SG STRIX is a relatively new core steel (introduced in late 2023) and it's been designed specifically to retain a lot of the positive features of the widely used SG2 steel but this steel is able to heat treated to a higher level of hardness increasing edge durability and retention.

Ease of Care & Maintenance Tips

The biggest benefit of STRIX steel is the modern composition that makes it very easy to sharpen and care for, maintaining an edge is significantly quicker and easier than similarly hard carbon steels and with the benefit of being stainless it's an excellent choice for anyone seeking the top levels of performance without the care compromises of carbon steels.

Our Verdict

A fantastic option for anyone seeking a top class knife forged by Takeshi Saji in a traditional style but enjoying the benefits of the latest technological developments in stainless steels.

Superb value for money for the craft, skill and quality of steel.
