First Impressions

First impressions for the VG1 damascus are very positive! We're always seeking good performance at this sort of price point and with the thin, flat grind and impressively well finished edge combined with that damascus cladding the Tstsuhiro certainly strikes the high notes we look for in a knife.

Beauty

The damascus cladding is quite subtle but distinctive and with the finish running the length of the blade it draws the eye that's for sure. Combined with the polished edge and simple black handle they're a good looking knife for sure.

In Hand

For many knives at a lower price point, the handle tends to be an area where a maker can compromise a little on quality without impacting on performance allowing the blade to be the focus.

The black pakka wood double riveted yo handles on the knife is perfectly good, it's nicely finished and smooth in hand. There are sometimes very small variances in the fit along the tang of the knife but certainly nothing that would impact performance and we feel a quite normal and reasonable compromise allowing for the blade to be higher quality.

Durability

You definitely won't have any issues with durability, the V1 is a solidly constructed and finished knife and the use of stainless cladding around the VG1 core means it will be easy to maintain and hone as you use it.

Ease of Care & Maintenance Tips

VG1 is easy to look after and as such is a popular steel. Give it a rinse and dry after use and then store it either on your knife rack or in your drawer with a blade guard (or even in the presentation box if you wish) and this knife will last many years.

Our Verdict

The Kiryu Kogyo Tetsuhiro VG1 damascus range offers a great blend of performance and visual appeal. Each blade features a striking damascus pattern giving the knives distinct beauty. The blade is precision ground with a slim, flat profile that gives it nimble handling and a quality cutting edge.

The VG1 core steel is known for its balance of hardness and ease of sharpening, making it ideal for home cooks and professional chefs alike.

Tetsuhiro VG1 damascus blades are solid and reliable with a thin spine that is robust enough to provide stability during chopping, yet the overall weight distribution keeps the knives well balanced. With its elegant finish, dependable build and precise edge geometry, the Tetsuhiro VG1 Damascus range offers great performance at a very reasonable price point.
