Naoki Mazaki
Naoki Mazaki is a skilled and independent Japanese blacksmith based in Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture - one of Japan’s most respected regions for traditional blade forging. Working entirely on his own from start to finish, Mazaki-san forges, grinds, heat treats, and finishes every knife by hand in his small workshop. He trained under master blacksmiths in Sanjo and gradually developed his own techniques and philosophies, prioritising traditional craftsmanship and direct control over the entire knife-making process. His approach results in blades that reflect both technical precision and deeply personal character.
Mazaki’s knives are known for their rustic, hand-forged aesthetic and high-performance profiles. He typically works with carbon steels such as Shirogami and Aogami, forging thin edges with strong distal tapers and crisp grinds that appeal to serious knife users.
Many of his blades feature kurouchi finishes and exhibit subtle asymmetry, giving them a distinctly handmade feel that are especially popular and prized for their workhorse geometry and confident food release.
Combining tradition with utility, Mazaki’s work showcases the artistry and functionality that define the best of Japanese hand-forged cutlery.
