Kurouchi finish Japanese knives

A kurouchi finish is a traditional blacksmith-style finish found on many Japanese knives, where the upper portion of the blade retains the dark, forged surface from the final heat treatment. This rustic look is intentionally left on the knife rather than polished away, helping to protect the blade from rust and reduce manufacturing time and cost.

Kurouchi finishes can vary greatly in texture and appearance, from rough and matte to smoother or slightly reflective, depending on the blacksmith and the knife’s intended aesthetic. It’s a functional and distinctive finish that celebrates the handmade nature of the blade.
