Katsushige Anryu

Katsushige Anryu is a fourth-generation blacksmith from Echizen, Fukui Prefecture, a region renowned for over 700 years of knife-making tradition. Born into a family of craftsmen, Anryu-san began forging knives at a young age under his father’s guidance, continuing a proud lineage of Echizen artisans.

Over more than five decades at the forge, he became known for his meticulous heat treatment, perfectly balanced geometry, and beautifully forged finishes in steels such as Blue #2 and VG10. His knives are admired for their combination of strength, precision, and understated beauty.

In 2022, after a lifetime dedicated to his craft, Anryu officially retired, passing the workshop to his nephew, Takumi Ikeda, the fifth generation of the family. Though no longer forging daily, Anryu remains a respected figure at Takefu Knife Village, where his influence and craftsmanship continue to inspire new generations of makers.
