Masuda Yoshihide
In the heart of Sanjo City—a region famed for its centuries-old blacksmithing heritage—Masuda Yoshihide is carving out a respected place among Japan’s new generation of artisanal bladesmiths. Though not as widely known internationally as some long-established names, Masuda-san has quietly earned a reputation for producing precision-forged blades that embody the core principles of Sanjo craftsmanship: balance, cutting performance, and understated beauty.
Masuda-san's forging style emphasizes clean, traditional lines and meticulous heat treatment, producing blades that feel refined and trustworthy in the hand.
He is particularly skilled in working with White #2 (Shirogami #2) and Blue #2 (Aogami #2) steels—classic carbon steels favored by traditionalists for their fine grain structure and excellent edge retention. His heat treatment techniques bring out the best in these steels, resulting in knives that sharpen easily and hold their edge well.
While Masuda Yoshihide often works under his own name, his blades are sometimes found in collaboration with respected Japanese retailers and brands that focus on small-batch, artisan-made knives. His knives may also appear in private label collections curated by shops dedicated to high-end Japanese cutlery.
Though still considered part of a younger wave of smiths, Masuda Yoshihide is increasingly recognised for his integrity as a craftsman and his dedication to preserving the quiet excellence that defines blacksmithing tradition.
